Leo Endorses Wollin & Hanna
Incumbent City Commissioner Wollin’s latest e-mail circulating out there in IRB cyberspace is a glowing endorsement by the Clearwater Gazette of herself and Phil Hanna for the two open City Commissioner seats to be filled next Tuesday.
It’s interesting that in all the other e-mails where she has included articles written by various area newspapers, Wollin included the reporter’s byline. She also deceptively excerpted only those paragraphs of the articles that pertained to HER—making it look as if these publications are somehow endorsing her. Then, when you take time to read the entire article, you discover that is not true at all.
For instance, Melinda Greene, the reporter at the Barrier Islands Gazette, wrote what is probably the best expose of all three candidates published to date. What those on Wollin’s e-mail list saw, however, was just the section about HER without even so much as a disclaimer that the article had been in any way excerpted. It unfairly characterized Melinda Greene as having taken a stance on one candidate versus the others—something that this responsible reporter, who very discreetly and religiously attends our commission meetings, would never do. One e-mail was even missing the required political disclaimer.
Now, Wollin is circulating the Clearwater Gazette’s endorsement—which is FINALLY a true endorsement of her and Phil Hanna. This one however is noticeably missing the byline of the endorsing reporter. And guess who the endorser is folks: None other than LEO COUGHLIN! His endorsement alone speaks volumes but the fact the Wollin would hide the name of the endorser is an even bigger statement.
Pay close attention to how Wollin’s e-mails provide only selective information because this is precisely the way she’s has behaved as our elected city official over the last two years. Does anyone have any evidence that this leopard will change her spots over the next two years? Certainly not if the way she is running her campaign is any indication.

Welcome back Leo. We missed your constant flip-flopping, wishy-washy, talking out of one end or another rhetoric.
In honor of your return, the new “Leo - Lying Then or Now? You Make the Call” game is being rolled out.
Recently quoted in a local paper Leo wrote about Terry Wollin, “Obviously, she has a challenge. But it’s hard to know who is challenging her. Probably someone not running at all. The big question is why anyone would want to challenge this woman who has done a stellar job over the past two years.” And “With new staff leadership, this is a time Indian Rocks Beach has a chance to move forward with Hamilton-Wollin remaining and Hanna joining Mayor R.B. Johnson and Cookie Kennedy and Dan Torres on the commission.”
Also quoted was “Among other things, House – a familiar figure at commission meetings – just gets many things plain wrong, most notably calling transfers made within the city’s financial structure loans."
Let’s look at the last quote first. Back on Aug 11th 2008, Leo blogged - “Things started to go wrong, according to the experts, some years ago. Enterprise funds ran short on money. Money was transferred – "borrowed" – from the general fund (example – the sewer fund has received about $700,000 in "loans").”
Borrowed? Is Leo lying then or now, or just talking out of the bottom half?
How about his first piece of mumbled garb. He is quoted with saying “this woman who has done a stellar job over the past two years.”
Let’s now look at some of his previous statements posted on his blog.
April 1st 2008 – “One ominous element came to light last week when the new commission took office. The auditor’s report said the sewer fund was in bad shape, having gone substantially negative in 2007. He said that if this continued through the current fiscal year, a report would have to be made to the state.”
I guess that could be considered a stellar job, but let us go on.
Also quoted is, “It seemed very clear that the auditor was indicating that a possible gigantic problem was looming. One source has said that Schless has told new members of the City Commission – Cookie Kennedy and Dan Torres – that he warned the old commission repeatedly that there was trouble with the sewer fund. Members of the former commission that ended its tenure last week, have no recollection of any such thing.”
Forgetting things is stellar when it works to your advantage.
The April 4th 2008 blog headline reads - City Commission Dilly-Dallies In Face of Financial Wreckage.
Leo is quoted with writing in the April 4th blog – “Elected officials are apparently as blissfully and blithefully ignorant of the financial mess the city is in as the citizens who will enjoy the annual "Beauty and the Beach" event tomorrow.”
I guess he didn’t mean to include Terry?
The April 8th blog headline reads - Shaky Financial Picture Continues as Commission Whistles in the Dark.
Did he mean to include Terry? I hear she can whistle the theme to the Andy Griffith Show like nobodies business.
The April 22nd 2008 blog headline reads - City Commission Placidly Sits While Impending Disaster Grows.
Leo is quoted with writing – “The three veteran holdovers on the commission – Mayor R.B. Johnson, Terry Hamilton-Wollin and Bert Valery – don’t seem to demonstrate any grasp of the dire financial straits the city is in.”
No grasp of finances? Does this sound like a woman who has done a stellar job over the past 2 years?
Which begs the question - Leo - Lying Then or Now? You Make the Call.
Now wasn’t that fun.
Leo is back with his Around Smear column? A devil snake can’t tell the truth. This is a clear example of why you shouldn’t lie; you just can’t keep anything straight.
Birds of a feather....
How did that piece of Crap get rehired to report on our city? This guy does not even live here and he is the authority on who is best of our city? The only thing this guy is capable of reporting on is who is padding his wallet for these endorsements! Shame on the Gazette for taking this parasite back, I encourage all of you to call them and voice your concern. Its about time he stopped writing about our former mayor and commissioners and focused on the current probles of our administration.
The best medicine for the Gazette is to call their advertisers and tell them you will no longer be patrons as long as lying Leo is still there.
Writing to the Gazette reinforces their decision to rehire the scumbag.
There are plenty of restaurants in town besides Guppy's and others that advertise in the Gazette.
IRBeHEARD should do a posting of those that advertise in the Gazette, so we can avoid them.
Why did they bring Leo back Jose is a much seasoned LIAR.
